Description
Before air conditioning, places like Philadelphia and New York City, could be brutal in the summer. High humidity and relentless heat made everyone miserable. Food spoiled, sleeping was difficult at best. So Victorian architects created fanciful ways to shade porches and bedrooms. High ceilings with tall double doors and transoms helped somewhat.
But the best way to beat the heat was to pack your trunks and head for the seashore. New Jersey has fine soft sand. Ocean breezes made life bearable. And what a pleasure to sit and relax with cool drinks and good conversation on a shaded veranda,. People actually conversed with one another in those long ago days.
Ocean Grove was founded as a religious, dry retreat. Liquor and alcoholism has always been a problem in America. In those times (1850-1910) hard drinking was a big problem. Until municipal clean water systems were established, cholera was often a lurking reality. And medicine not advanced enough to eradicate the issue.
