Description
The 1870's, when many of these seaside victorians were erected, was an exciting time period of change in America. Also great upheaval. The Civil War had been over for almost ten years. and people were looking ahead. Medicine and invention were accelerating at a rapid pace. The Centennial Exposition was planned for 1876. Conveniences were mostly mechanical not electrical. Telephones were first shown at the Centennial in 1876. What would these Victorians think of today with our iPhones?
The seaside community of Ocean Grove, New Jersey was founded as a Methodist dry community. Alcohol excess was a real and present problem in America at that time. This later led to Prohibition from 1920 till 1933. People still drank.
So sit on the porch, relax, have an iced tea, and rejuvenate.
