Description
Cape Cod, Massachusetts was was formed by the glaciers of the last ice age. Jutting out into the stormy Atlantic, it can be a formidable obstacle to shipping. Hence the great number of lighthouses dotting the coastline.
Highland lighthouse first dates from1798 and is one of the oldest. Standing more than 150 feet above sea level, its beacon can be seen 23 miles out at sea. the tower and lens has had to be moved farther inland because of erosion.
A tremendous engineering feat. Last done in 1997. The view from the top is pretty impressive and worth the hike. The huge first order fresnel lens is also worth the sore legs up and down the spiral staircase.
