Description
Cable Cars are synonymous with San Francisco history. Just like Rice-a-Roni. I had to go into training before my last visit in order to negotiate those hills. A Mr. Halliday was the the inventor of the system in the early 1870's. Without this ingenious contraption San Francisco could never have expanded. Surprisingly, New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia adopted the idea. By the mid 1890's they were gone except for San Francisco. Sprague and his electric motor did them in. If you are headed for San Francisco, visit the Cable Car Museum. Well worth the time.
