Description
Walking around San Francisco is a treat for the eyes. You see all kinds of fantastic and imaginative houses. A tribute to Victorian steam powered jig saws and prefabricated design ornament. Builders could go to a lumber yard and select from a huge array of already manufactured columns, windows, doors, and pediments. All it took was a little imagination and there you had San Francisco.

Amazing! I would never have thought it! I remember the "prefabs" that were thrown up after World Ward 2. They and a parade of shops had been hurriedly built just behind our street to replace housing destroyed by bombing, which means that my parents must have come perilously close to being bombed. Even stranger, it transpired that my saxophone teacher was born in that very same house and that his parents had moved up from Coventry a week before the Luftwaffe turned it into what one of their pilots described as "ein Flammenmeer" - a sea of flames. Nice to know that prefabrication does not necessarily equal tragedy. San Francisco must be a truly fascinating place and the vertical dimension is very challenging to photograph. Great capture!

Thank you Kathryn. San Francisco generally has a mild climate which makes for easier living. It has a lot of culture and an appreciation for the arts. Also a tolerant attitude. Not always perfect, but interesting.
