Description
Chatham Lighthouse sits at the elbow of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Originally there were two towers flanking the keepers quarters. This became unnecessary when revolving Fresnel lenses were introduced in 1857. The other tower became Nausset Beach Lighthouse. The first lighthouse on this spot was built in 1808. They were forty foot octagonal wooden towers. The second set of towers eventually, along with the keepers quarters fell into the sea. The Fresnel lenses were saved and in use till 1923. If you stand on a moonless night looking out at the pitch black sea, you realize the necessity of lights such as these.
