Description
Frederick Church, with Thomas Cole his teacher, founded the Hudson River school of landscape painting. They specialized in dramatic views of Catskill wilderness. These untamed landscapes appealed to viewers in mid 19th century America. A new republic bursting with energy, vitality, and promise. Thomas Cole emigrated from England in his early twenties. Frederick Church came from a wealthy family. Olana, high up on a hill, was the product and outcome of wanderlust and world travel. He framed his windows with landscape like views of the Hudson. Quite impressive. But money was available. Church was a good marketer of his own work. The picture above is from his studio. He was married with four children whom he dragged all over kingdom come to find new stimulation for his creativity.
The house by today's standards and taste is dark and heavy. Maybe with guests a wife and four kids running around it was more jolly. But this was before electricity and photography became accessible. Wealth and grand homes needed servants to take care of what today is only the flick of a switch. Church was friendly with Frederick Law Olmsted, America's premier landscapist and designer of New York City Central Park. After the death of last daughter, Olana was almost lost to developers. It took a lot of cash for upkeep. Thankfully a group of prominent New Yorkers including Jackie Kennedy and Governor Rockefeller saved the day. and there we have it. There is much more of interest to this story. With many fun tidbits. Well worth research and read.
