Description
This lighthouse has a kind of wacky history. Yaquina Head light was constructed in 1873, but in the wrong location. Due to a mapmakers error, this caused a lot of trouble. Compounding the the problem was the fact that the lighthouse sat on a bed of heavily magnetized iron which caused wide deviation on a ship's compass. And this led to several shipwrecks. In fact, one of the wrecks was carrying parts for the light's first order fresnel lens.
