What a fantastic piece of history. A truly amazing shot.

Ira Shander replied:

Thanks Joe. I saved this Agfa slide from my first time in Europe. (1969) London was the the first stop. I was so excited to to see new worlds. Everything was a first. And we got around without Google maps.

Another amazing blast from my past! Thank you for sharing these highly emotive, nostalgic shots, Ira. I often used to get off the Tube at Tottenham Court Road, if they were doing maintenance on the lift at Goodge Street, when I worked in the Medical School at UCL. I used to take my camera film to Underwoods to be developed. I did not, in my wildest imagination, dream of a digital camera!

Ira Shander replied:

Kathryn, thank you again for your kind thoughts and perceptive observations. When I took this Agfa slide in 1969 it was my first day in London. I had never been out of the states on my own. London was such a great and exciting experience. Lately everything I saw starting to come back into my mind as I originally experienced it. When I first started getting serious about photography at 17, I always tried to capture the "right" moment. As in music, timing is critical. A different world then.

I was trying to guess the year. Was going to predict 1974 but see from your description that I’m a few years out. There’s something fascinating about photos from a bygone era.

Artist's Description

Cities change. That's a given. When this photo was taken in late June 1969, London was at the end of an exciting decade of change. One of the things that impressed me so much about London, was the. genuine kindness and helpfulness of everyday Londoners. I never forgot it.
Today, this area is all huge steel and glass towers.

About Ira Shander

Ira Shander

Hello, and thank-you for taking time to visit my web site. As a long time illustrator specializing in pen and ink, photography developed as a means for me to become expressive in color. My specialty as a line artist has always been history and architecture. I've created series for major companies, publishers, and cultural institutions throughout the United States. Take time to visit some of my galleries. I welcome commissions such as house portraits and hobby related subject matter. Again, take a peek at the galleries to get a better idea. I hope that you enjoy both means of expression and visit often. Thanks, Ira Shander
