Description
The stone towers of San Gimignano were constructed by wealthy families during the Middle Ages throughout central and northern Italy. They protected the inhabitants from marauders, thieves, and annoying relatives. They even managed to visit each other by way of chain bridges. This particular town once had 70 towers. Only about twelve remain.

Thank-you for taking time to drop by and comment. These towers are amazing considering they had no scaffolding in those days. They must have been very dark inside. And glass windows only came into general use after the Elizabethan Age.

Wonderful pov! I love the shapes and light! VF
Ira Shander replied:
Thank-you Meg. These towers were considered status symbols during their time. So the bigger the tower……..you can fill in the rest. Finally laws had to be enacted to set limits.
