An excellent depiction of The Bug Lighthouse! What a terrible tragedy, though! Thomas Small, I presume, survived the fire? He must never have been the same after that awful experience, I should think.

Ira Shander replied:

I am not sure if he survived or not. If he did he probably changed his occupation.

Artist's Description

In June 1929, lighthouse keeper Thomas Small experienced his worst nightmare. He burned down his own lighthouse. While doing routine scraping and painting stray sparks created a firestorm. In ten minutes it was all gone.
Originally the Boston Narrows Light was constructed in 1856 at the entrance to Boston Harbor. It was placed to help ship's captains avoid dangerous Harding's Ledge. It's screw pile design was unusual for New England. This type was more common throughout Chesapeake Bay. It was known affectionately for years as the Bug Lighthouse.

About Ira Shander

Hello, and thank-you for taking time to visit my web site. As a long time illustrator specializing in pen and ink, photography developed as a means for me to become expressive in color. My specialty as a line artist has always been history and architecture. I've created series for major companies, publishers, and cultural institutions throughout the United States. Take time to visit some of my galleries. I welcome commissions such as house portraits and hobby related subject matter. Again, take a peek at the galleries to get a better idea. I hope that you enjoy both means of expression and visit often. Thanks, Ira Shander
