Description
To modern eyes, side wheeler steamboats look quaint. Almost like floating tea kettles. And in effect they were. Constructed of wood, they were always prone to fire. The Frontenac was constructed in 1870 for service along Lake Cayuga. It was in service for over thirty years until it burned in 1907. It was about 150 feet long with a single stack. Popular for excursions it was vital for communication and getting about before better roads and automobiles. It was a convenient and pleasant way to travel. Especially in such a rural area. No one knows what caused the disastrous fire with large loss of life. But it happened. The wreck loomed close to shore until World War Two when the remains were sold for scrap to win the war.
