Description
This Photochrome dating from the mid 1890's shows the Imperial Chapel at Peterhof Palace outside of St. Petersburg. Located on the Gulf of Finland the palace, fountain, and gardens have been painstakingly restored from the ruins of the Second World War. For history buffs the story behind the construction of this palace makes for a fascinating read. Peter the Great's desire to emulate France and other Western European powers of the day, led him to visualize and construct Peterhof from the wilderness. Foreign artists, architects, and engineers came and stayed for years.
