Description
Contrary to popular opinion, Venice is not a theme park. It's a real city where people work and make a living. And tourists are part of that business. It amazes me how anything is left standing after all this time. As a guide explained to me, all of Venice is built on pilings of wood impervious to rot and mold. It comes from across the Adriatic in what was the former Yugoslavia.
Venice is not the only city with canals as highways and streets. But glorious they are.

This is a super find Ira....it always amazes me that such beautiful buildings still stand after centuries of having their footings in water. If we tried that here they would fall down in no short order. I really liked Venice....have been twice....this is a great shot of this door.....like and favourite and congratulations on your features. I saw this one in Positive Energy.
Ira Shander replied:
The Venetians imported wood from across the Adriatic in what was at one time Yugoslavia. Somehow it hardened over time and became impervious to rot and decay. That's how it was explained to me. Clever little bunnies weren't they. Nations used what was at hand. Thank you for the kind words.
