Description
In the 1850's and 60's, New York City was fast becoming America's major center of trade and finance. In order to facilitate the need for more space, Architects began to use cast iron pillars and supports for more floor space. Windows had to be large to let in light. Before electricity and the Edison incandescent bulb, there was illumination by gas. You needed a lot of burners to light the interiors. And flames made it hotter in the summer. Air conditioning was a century away.

Excellent image! And now it is closed for the lockdown! Where will be 100 years hence, I wonder? This building has a lot of character, so it would be a pity to replace it with some tasteless modern creation.
