Yes I do remember the creosote smell. And also the tar from torpedoed tankers that got washed up on the beach right after the Second World War. Hard to get off the feet. When I was a kid, my dad would give me a half-dollar to go up on the "boards" and get lost for a few hours. Nobody even thought about molesters or strange type people. Different world. Thank-you for the kind words about my drawings.

They were wonderful memories Ira, I remember the creosote smell of the boardwalk, the arcade and saltwater taffy shoppes....l/f

Thank-you Carol. I love bringing history and old architecture alive. The Atlantic City I remember as a kid was so different from today. People would crowd into dumpy old Victorian hotels and rooming houses just to be able to get away from the stilling city of Philadelphia. It was fun to get dressed up and look your best. My folks used to rent houses that were always hot but who cared. Relatives would appear out of the blue like magic. How that little refrigerator fed all those people I'll never know.

You have amazing talent. The detail and scope of this is amazing as well as the skill that you demonstrate.

Ira Shander replied:

Thank-you Regina. I've been drawing like this for many years. Drawing for me is like making music. Except I never learned how to read music. I like the way you see cities.

Beautiful work Ira! So much detail! It does have a fascinating history. I love this!

Ira Shander replied:

Thanks Meg. Can you imagine traveling in those days before air conditioning?? Keeping clean and cool in those Philadelphia summers?

Thank-you Allen. I love Atlantic City history.

Artist's Description

Atlantic City, New Jersey as shown in 1883 was still a pretty scrappy place. The Boardwalk was not yet permanent and stored in sections over the winter. The stores were wooden sheds. But electricity already illumined the Boardwalk through carbon arc lamps. Visitors could rent woolen bathing suits for a quarter. And yesthere was ice cream. And plenty of vice.

About Ira Shander

Ira Shander

Hello, and thank-you for taking time to visit my web site. As a long time illustrator specializing in pen and ink, photography developed as a means for me to become expressive in color. My specialty as a line artist has always been history and architecture. I've created series for major companies, publishers, and cultural institutions throughout the United States. Take time to visit some of my galleries. I welcome commissions such as house portraits and hobby related subject matter. Again, take a peek at the galleries to get a better idea. I hope that you enjoy both means of expression and visit often. Thanks, Ira Shander
