Description
Margate, New Jersey, home to famed Lucy the Elephant, had its clusters of large Victorian homes. But not too many seem to have survived. They were always huge rambling affairs painted the obligatory white with green shutters. The white and green became popular after the Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago. The large windows and bays were designed to catch sunlight. Remember, these were designed when electric lighting was in its infancy.
Margate was once known as South Atlantic City. It shares the same barrier island.
