Description
Just off London's Portobello road Market is a stunning row of colorful late Regency terraces or row homes. A great gift on a cloudy rainy day. Each house in the row was painted a bright pastel color. We take interior lighting for granted these days. Daylight is at our fingertips. But in the 1820's and 30's, homes were dark. Candles and whale oil laps bridged the gap. Gas and kerosene were just around the corner in time. And interior electric lighting was not really affordable till after 1900. The classic simplicity of this architecture is still timeless.

Great capture! My mother was born just at the end of World War 2 and she lived through The Great Depression. The family were so poor that they could not afford heating or lighting, so that, when darkness fell, they had to go to bed and stay there until daylight returned. She often used to say to me that people of my generation "lived like lords and ladies" compared to her generation, and she was right. I had better not say anything about my grandchildren's generation here. They do not know that they are born!
