Description
In 1974, an iconic early New York skyscraper was torn down. Built on a tiny sliver of land in 1895, and only twelve stories high, it towered above its neighbors. It was designed by Henry Janeway Hardenbergh, best known for his designs of the Dakota Apartments, and Plaza Hotel. The exclusive Dakota became infamous because of resident John Lennon with his wife Yoko Ono. The Wolfe Building was steel framed and made to look like a 12 store Flemish guild house. Ironically, Hardenburgh's Dakota apartments got the name because they were so far uptown in undeveloped territory. Within five years, the Wolfe Building became dwarfed by neighbors two and three times as high.
