Description
Prague is a funny kind of city. You always run into the unexpected. The offbeat. These three beach chairs were sitting in a bleak cobblestoned alleyway. Waiting for visitors.
They reminded me of a story I once read about a twelve year old soon to be young man. He and his parents were forced into the Warsaw Ghetto. As conditions rapidly deteriorated, people tried to find some semblance of former lives before the war. Some semblance of normality. The little boy in his wanderings came across strange sight. An artist had painted a mural of a seashore scene and set up a few fold up beach chairs like these in a vacant bombed out lot. For a few pennies you could sit for a couple of minutes and pretend life was possible. There was a portable phonograph playing some familiar old tunes. The little boy lost his parents in Auschwitz but somehow survived the war. Later he managed to make it to America and begin a new life.

A very powerful composition with the strong leading lines and the dominance of red! An amazing story of the twelve year old boy who lost his parents in Auschwitz too! People today seem to think that they are martyrs because they are told to wear face masks, wash their hands and stay in their comfortable houses with all mod cons, televisions, computers, telephones, etc. They have no concept of what it was like to spend all night in a cold, draughty air raid shelter, or, much worse, cower in fear in a basement or cellar hoping to escape the attention of the Nazis.It is good to know that the young man survived the war. I can imagine that the sight of stripes must have been very emotive for him, because he would remember these chairs in the ghetto and then, if my memory serves me right, I think that the prisoners in Auschwitz wore a sort of striped uniform too. He must have escaped the gas chambers because of his age and been sent to Birkenau, I would think. This, of course, does not solve the mystery of what those deck chairs were doing in that alleyway in Prague! Your excellent picture certainly exercises the imagination, Ira!
