Description
Fifty years ago, as part of a long summer's journey, I had the opportunity to visit the reconstructed Peterhof Palace complex. Located outside of the then Leningrad on the Gulf of Finland, Czar Peter the Great's palace was being meticulously reconstructed from ruins of the Second World War. This was also the location of the famous Amber room. Long missing now rebuilt from old plans and photographs. At that time the interiors were not completed. Peter built for himself a small "house" by the waters edge. A retreat while his palace was evolving. This was the Chinese room. Also reconstructed. Peter was a big fan of the Dutch. He lived there for a while and learned the art of ship building. As the Dutch were big traders with China, he must have taken a liking to their beautiful porcelain. Peter wanted to import the best to Russia.
The name Mon Plaiser comes to mind for his pavilion by the sea. But it has been a long time.
