Description
When winters were colder in the Northeastern portion of the US, ice was an annual problem on the mighty Hudson River. Traffic up and down was hectic and so the need for lighthouses. The first Saugerties was commissioned in 1836 and succumbed to ice in the 1860. Finally a stone caisson was built to withstand the elements. And it succeeded. Automated and run by a conservancy it is now a museum and is open to the public. I also have done a pen and ink drawing of this lighthouse ad can be found in my lighthouse gallery here on FAA.
