Description
At one time, Atlantic City and her Absecon Island neighbors Ventnor, Margate, and Longport, had a large number of Victorian wood frame houses. Fanciful hotels and Mansard roofed homes made for a riot of styles and colors. As tastes changed and fire codes came into effect, many disappeared. There were storms and flooding. Many were torn down just to make way for the latest in architectural trends. Victorians were usually balloon frame construction with ornament culled from design books. Companies had catalogues of windows, doors, ornament. You name it. Much of San Francisco was built in the same way.
