Description
Nevsky Prospekt is a long and wide boulevard which bisects the city of St. Petersburg. On the right is Znamensya Church or Church of the Sign. Erected between 1794 and 1804, it no longer exists. During Stalin's day (1940) it was torn down to make way for a Metro station which opened in 1955. This photograph dates from 1896; and is a Photochrome process colorization from a black and white image. To the left Is Znamenskya Square, later renamed Uprising Square
because of it's connections with the Russian Revolution. Notice the horse cars to the left.
