Description
Cable cars came to San Francisco in the 1870's. At one time there were about ten independent lines crossing the city. The earthquake and fire of 1906 devastated the transportation network. But within two years the city was on its way to recovery. Cable cars ruled for about fifteen years in many of America's major cities. (1880-1895) The invention of the electric motor made cable cars redundant. Trolleys could go anywhere at much higher speeds. Backward or forwards. Cables could go in one direction only. And at ten miles per hour tops. But they did expand the growth of cities into outlying suburbs. And then came the automobile. There is an interesting film made in San Francisco four days before the 1906 Earthquake. A cameraman placed his motion picture camera on the the front of a Market Street cable car. You can see early automobiles darting in and out. Horse drawn carriages and carts seem to get in everyone's way. Pedestrians are jay walking like crazy. There are electric trolleys whizzing by. Four days later it would all be gone.
