Description
Most people believe that San Francisco is the only city in the world that ever had cable cars. Most definitely not true. In the United States alone there were at one time almost 30 cities with cable systems. Among them Philadelphia, Chicago, New York, and Denver. Most of these lasted about 15 years. And they were a great improvement on the old horse drawn trams. They were much cleaner and not dependent animal power. A central plant with a cable several miles long pulled the cars at about 10 to 12 mph. Not fast by today's standards, but reliable. It was the invention of the electric motor that made cable cars obsolete. Trolleys could speed way faster when needed. And soon the old routes sprouted poles and trolley wires. San Francisco almost lost her cable cars after WW ll. But there was enough of an outcry that thankfully saved them for posterity. And now they have become an icon of the city. They can be noisy and a little scary and uncomfortable on steep hills, but it's a great way to see the city.
