Description
Summer places have a way of ingratiating themselves in our memories. When the Jersey shore was first developed in the 1850's, towns such as Atlantic City and Cape May built huge wooden hotels with communal dining rooms. Promenading by the sea was thought to be salubrious. And it probably was.
Architects and builders created fanciful homes in a myriad of styles. Wood was cheap. And jig saws could produce any pattern easily. One of the benefits of the steam driven industrial revolution. So rich or poor. The shore was the place to be in those non air-conditioned summer days.
Ocean Grove, New Jersey is a treasure trove of American Victorian wooden architecture.
As a personal aside, many of these old homes reminded me of wonderful old New Yorker magazine covers.
