Description
Cape May, NJ has had an amazing renaissance. When I took this photograph around 1983, the Star Villa looked as though it had fallen on hard times. Many of the surrounding Victorians were in equally sad shape. There were many vacant lots.
The whole town looked as though it needed a blowtorch and several new coats of paint. Many of the homes had lost their ordinal ornament and spires.
But by the late 80's there was a new spirit in the air. Developers and people with vision began to buy up and restore these lost treasures. I found on Shorpy an original photo of this hotel. it was so jaunty and fabulous with a cupola on top. There were spires and trim. These hotels were fun to visit. Large dining rooms with the all you can eat American Plan. Guests would sit all together at large tables and eat "home style". Shutters kept out the heat. People had great fun with simple pleasures. Cape May is always worth the visit.
