When I began this drawing from an archival photograph, I wondered if this great old San Francisco Victorian still exists. After some hunting around on the web I found that it does. It's located at 1976 California Street. It was constructed in 1883. Currently the decorative roof is gone as is the front staircase. An ugly garage obscures the bottom. It is broken up into six or seven apartments: and is assessed at about $3,000,000. Originally it had an 80 foot ballroom and magnificent molding and hand carved woodwork throughout. Much of which is still extant. It's neighbor to the left is there as well.
Hello, and thank-you for taking time to visit my web site. As a long time illustrator specializing in pen and ink, photography developed as a means for me to become expressive in color. My specialty as a line artist has always been history and architecture. I've created series for major companies, publishers, and cultural institutions throughout the United States. Take time to visit some of my galleries. I welcome commissions such as house portraits and hobby related subject matter. Again, take a peek at the galleries to get a better idea. I hope that you enjoy both means of expression and visit often. Thanks, Ira Shander

A fabulous drawing of this historic house!
Nadalyn Larsen
The detail you put into your drawings is amazing, Ira. I would never have that much patience. This is real skill. Real artistry.
Ira Shander replied:
Thanks Nadalyn. This house still exists in SF. It has been broken up into multiple apartments. Which isn't so surprising. I've always liked to draw old Victorians. They just intrigue me. Regarding patience, in this crazy world, we need it.

I love old buildings. This would have been absolutely beautiful in it's prime. Your drawing is lovely and shows a lot of admiration for the building. Congratulations!
Ira Shander replied:
Thank you Lynne for taking time to comment. I really appreciate it. I started this drawing at the beginning of the pandemic in late March. Worked on it off and on. In doing historic photo research, I realized that San Francisco must have lost a lot of buildings from this period destroyed in 1906. The outer suburbs and districts survived somewhat intact. During WW2 there were many scrap metal drives that denuded San Francisco of its decorative iron work. Also, strange modernizations of old Victorians.
