Description
On December 27th, 1817, Thomas Broadwood, piano maker of London had his workmen remove piano number 7362 from the warehouse and readied for shipment.
The recipient was to be Ludwig Von Beethoven in Vienna. This six octave piano travelled by sailing ship around Spain and Portugal through the Mediterranean to the port of Trieste. From there overland to Vienna.
In those days there were basically two types of pianos. The Viennese with a light transparent sound. And the English with a deeper, fuller, more sonorous approach.
Also more sturdy in construction. Piano hammers were covered in leather rather than felt as today. The sound was a bit more transparent as compared to the present day. Beethoven kept this piano until his death in 1827. Eventually it was purchased by Franz Liszt; and later bequeathed to the Hungarian National Museum in Budapest. Recently restored. Listening to Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas on an instrument such as this brings us as close to the source as we can get.
