Description
Much of original San Francisco was destroyed in the Earthquake and Fire of 1906.
But large areas of Pacific Heights, The Western Addition, and Haight-Ashbury did survive. New building after the disaster tended to lean towards classical motifs and ornament. Redwood and cedar were readily used because of nearby availability.
When bright color became fashionable again in the 1960's, a great deal of experimentation was necessary in order to determine which paints worked best. Latex or oil. How buildings faced the sun made a huge difference as to fading and cracking.
