Description
Saint Paul's Cathedral was designed by architect Sir Christopher Wren. It replaced an earlier church destroyed during the Great Fire in the late 1660's. This view from Ludgate Hill shows the immensity of his conception. During the Blitz in 1940-41, most of the surrounding area was flattened by the Luftwaffe, Miraculously, St. Pauls survived the War nearly unscathed.
It was said during construction that Sir Christopher would wander the site asking questions of the laborers. He asked one what he was doing. The mason replied that he was putting up a wall. A second said that he was building a beautiful monument to God. And so he was.
