Description
The Paris Opera was planned as the crown jewel of Baron Haussmann's revitalization and modernization of the city of Paris. In twenty short years, wide boulevards replaced narrow ancient streets dating back to the Middle Ages. It caused great disruption. The poor were forced to move to the outskirts of the city because of rising rents. In their place came magnificent tree lined boulevards we associate with the Paris of today. These ideas were copied throughout the great cities of Europe and South America for the next fifty years.
