Description
Prague has miraculously survived the ages intact. Not without great pain of course. Although it is a democracy today, from 1948 till 1989 it was under Communist authoritarian rule. I saw that first hand in 1977 on my first visit. You never know what you've lost till you lose it. Freedom and the right to chart your own course. Religious wars and life under the thumb of the Hapsburgs for several hundred years meant that national yearnings and language had to be suppressed. Although there was great cultural ferment and relative peace, not everyone got a place at the table. The Nazi occupation from 1939 to 1945 was brutal. Last September I was talking to a native of St. Petersburg, Russia working in Prague. She felt Prague was like a village compared to her native city. And that people drove too slow. Different temperaments. My experience has been that natives of Prague are quietly proud of their capitol. And very kind and helpful.
