Description
In June, 1929, lighthouse keeper Thomas Small experienced his worst nightmare.
He burned down his own lighthouse. While doing routine scraping and painting stray sparks created a firestorm. In ten minutes it was all gone.
Originally the Boston Narrows Light was constructed in 1856 at the entrance to Boston Harbor. It was placed to help ship captains avoid the dangerous Harding's Ledge. It's screw-pile design was unusual for New England. This design was more common in the Chesapeake Bay.
